What is the City Doing to Reduce Crime?

17-Year-Old Boy Killed in Akron Shooting

AKRON, Ohio (WOIO) - Authorities say officers responded to a call about a shooting near East Glenwood Avenue and Dan Street. A 17-year-old male was killed, and a 23-year-old man was injured.

This is just one of several shootings that have occurred in Akron in recent months. According to the Akron Police Department, there have been 20 murders in the city so far in 2023, compared to 35 during the same period in 2022.

The police department is working to reduce crime by increasing patrols in high-crime areas and working with community groups to identify and address the root causes of violence.

In addition to the police department's efforts, the city of Akron is also working to reduce crime through a number of initiatives, including:

  • Investing in affordable housing and job training programs
  • Expanding access to mental health and substance abuse treatment
  • Working with schools to provide mentoring and support services for at-risk youth

These initiatives are part of the city's broader strategy to create a safer and more vibrant community for all of its residents.
